The idea of literal representation holds no interest for artist Lisa Cuscuna. When gallery patrons look at one of her surrealistic paintings and ask, “What are you trying to say?” she would prefer that viewers come up with their own interpretations

Artist Lisa Cuscuna’s surrealistic paintings challenge conventional perspectives and invite viewers to interpret her work in their own ways. She combines the real and the surreal, often depicting open doorways floating in the sky or using poured painting techniques to create layers of abstract art. Cuscuna’s enthusiasm for the creative process and her belief in the unity of art and Zen are evident in her work. She describes her painting as an ever-changing new career, full of improvisation and personal adjustments.

Artist Lisa Cuscuna’s surrealistic paintings challenge literal representation, encouraging viewers to interpret them freely. Retired from her job as a video producer, Cuscuna finds inspiration in the unfettered creative process of abstract art. Her recent work explores the technique of “poured painting”, allowing the paint to take on a life of its own. Despite the challenges, Cuscuna finds joy in the process, seeing Zen and art as intertwined. She also volunteers as treasurer for the Loft Artists Association, juggling her passion for painting with her commitments.
